California Democrats Pass Bill Aimed at Banning ICE Agents From Wearing Masks

Last week, in the wake of the assassination of Charlie Kirk, California legislators approved a bill aimed at making it easier for leftist lunatics to attack ICE agents by barring most law enforcement officers from concealing their faces when interacting with the public.

All of a sudden, the former COVID-era mask police are now against masks on police.

The bill cleared the supermajority-Democrat Legislature and now awaits action from Gov. Gavin Newsom. If signed, it would apply to local police and state agencies - but Newsom has tempered expectations from his party members and acknowledged that the state has limited authority over federal officers.

The bill was authored by Sen. Scott Wiener, who is best known for authoring a bill that decriminalized knowingly giving someone HIV. Despite concerns over enforcement, it is designed mainly to target ICE members. He told ABC10: “ICE agents, bounty hunters, and who knows who else are running around wearing ski masks, grabbing people from front yards, bus stops, and workplaces, and shoving them into unmarked vehicles. SB627 will ban this kind of extreme masking, while still allowing reasonable exemptions for things like medical masks, SWAT teams, or undercover work.”

According to Fox News:

The bill is the first of its kind to pass through a state legislature, although similar legislation has been introduced elsewhere, including in Tennessee, Michigan, Illinois, New York, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania. Democrats on Capitol Hill have also proposed a mask ban for law enforcement officers.

Proponents of the bill said the proposal is needed following a Supreme Court ruling earlier this week allowing the federal government to resume sweeping immigration raids in Los Angeles, which also permits agents to target migrants based on things like race or ethnicity, speaking in Spanish or presence at specific locations.

Newsom has about a month to sign the bill into law.
