A Democrat that Kamala Harris cited as a “rising star” within the Democrat Party lost a mayoral primary the day after she made her comment.

When asked by Rachel Maddow what she thought about the rise of Zohran Mamdani, Harris brought up Rep. Barbara Drummond, a Democrat that has served as an Alabama state representative since 2014.

“Let me just say this, [Zoran Mamdani] is not the only star,” said Harris. “I mean, there are people like Barbara Drummond in Mobile, Alabama; Helena Moreno in New Orleans. “They’re all running for mayor, too, and they are stars.”

Drummond was running to become the next Mayor of Mobile, Alabama. Municipal elections in Mobile are officially nonpartisan, but she is still a registered Democrat, and her opponent Spiro Cheriogotis, a former Mobile County District Judge, is a registered Republican.

Shortly after Harris’ comments, the rising star went down in flames. The voters of Mobile elected their first new Mayor since 2013, and it was Cheriogotis.

Let’s hope Harris starts branding more Democrats “rising stars” - we can use all the help we can get.
