Democrat Rep. Who Stormed Newark ICE Facility Charged With Assaulting Law Enforcement

In a shocking turn of events, a Democrat Representative may actually be facing consequences for their actions.

Earlier this month New Jersey Rep. LaMonica McIver took part in a protest against an ICE facility in Newark that turned violent where she was caught on video “allegedly” assaulting members of law enforcement. The mayor of Newark was also arrested at the protest.

According to Fox

Acting U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey Alina Habba is charging Rep. LaMonica McIver for her alleged misconduct towards law enforcement in front of Delaney Hall in New Jersey earlier this month, but she is dismissing the trespassing charge against Newark Mayor Ras Baraka.

"Representative LaMonica McIver assaulted, impeded, and interfered with law enforcement in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 111 (a)(1)," Habba said in a letter shared on X Monday. "That conduct cannot be overlooked by the chief federal law enforcement official in the State of New Jersey, and it is my Constitutional obligation to ensure that our federal law enforcement is protected when executing their duties."

The charge carries up to an eight year sentence if found guilty.

Democrats have responded to denounce the charges. A statement signed by House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Minority Whip Katherine Clark, Democratic Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar, Caucus Vice Chair Ted Lieu and Assistant Leader Joe Neguse called the charges “morally bankrupt” and “lacking any basis in fact” - I guess hoping that nobody saw the video that caused them.

Back in December of 2023, Republican Rep. George Santos was expelled from the House over criminal charges in a 311-114 vote (a two-thirds majority is needed). Republicans joined Democrats to expel him while already facing a thin majority. It’s already clear that Republicans were not setting any new precedent here for punishing bad behavior, even from within one’s party, and there’s about a zero percent chance that McIver will be expelled from the House as the result of her actions - though a prison sentence may end up doing just that.
