Legal Immigrants Swing 40-Points in Trump’s Direction on Immigration

The advantage that Democrats once had on the issue of immigration, especially among legal immigrants, has completely ratcheted back in Donald Trump’s favor.

CNN’s chief data analyst Harry Enten Monday revealed that a majority of Americans side with President Trump and Republicans’ views on immigration amid his aggressive response to the violent anti-ICE riots in Los Angeles. 

Enter highlighted three separate polls where respondents favored Republicans more than Democrats on the issue. “The American electorate believes that the Democrats don’t have a clue on the issue of immigration,” Enter said. 

Among the data points Enten highlighted included how Trump’s net approval rating (percent approval minus percent disapproval) on immigration has gone “up like a rocket” between this time in his first term (-21) and now (+1). “There is no issue on which Trump is doing so much better than he was in his first term, more than the issue of immigration,” he explained.

Among immigrant voters specifically, they trusted democrats more on immigration in 2020 by a +32 margin - that’s since shifted to a +8 margin for the GOP. The favorability of illegal aliens among legal immigrants went from +24 to -6 over the same time period.

On a longer timeframe, from 2016-2024, Trump’s favorability among immigrants skyrocketed from 36% to 47%.
