Latest Census Data Shows Americans Continuing to Flee Blue States for Red

Newly released Census data shines some light on the continued Blue State exodus in America, with the most recent available data (July 1, 2020-July 1, 2021) showing that the South is the only geographic region in the U.S. seeing net migration.

Florida, Texas, and Arizona are the top destinations, while California, New York, and Illinois are seeing the most departures. On average, red states are are the biggest beneficiaries of national migration, while blue states are losing the most residents. While a vindication of red state policies, there’s also the risk of migration turning them blue.

The Cato Institute’s “Freedom in the 50 States” report this year found that of the top ten freest states, eight have Republican governors, while of the ten least free, only one (Vermont – which has an overwhelmingly Democrat state legislature and populice) has a Republican governor.

A study published last year from Truth in Accounting painted a similar picture when it came specifically to the fiscal health of the 50 states, with the best run being run by Republicans, and the worst run by Democrats.
