Leftist Rag Called Out by JD Vance for Taking Soros Money Denies It - Immediately Gets Exposed

Bhaskar Sunkara, the President of the leftist rag “The Nation,” is spreading lies after Vice-President JD Vance called them out for receiving funds from Alex/George Soros’ Open Society Foundations.

“I read a story in The Nation magazine about my dear friend Charlie Kirk,” Vance said while hosting the Charlie Kirk Show. “George Soros' Open Society Foundation funds this magazine [The  Nation], as does the Ford Foundation and many other wealthy titans of the American progressive movement.” The article in question was titled “Charlie Kirk’s Legacy Deserves No Mourning,” and danced on his grave, as few liberals have shied away from doing. 

“I'm not sure where he's getting his information, but JD Vance is lying about The Nation magazine. We'd welcome donations from anyone who respects our editorial independence, but we're not funded, not one dime, by Soros or Open Society Foundation,” Sunkara wrote. 

But to the surprise of no one, Vance is correct here, and Sunkara is lying. Newsbusters’ Joseph Vazquez brought the receipts: 

Here’s the deception: Up until 2019, The Nation was directly affiliated with the nonprofit media outfit The Nation Institute, which had in fact received at least $1,349,000 from Soros’s organizations between 2004 and 2019, according to Foundation Directory Online data. In January 2019, it was announced that The Nation Institute was officially rebranding to become the Type Media Center to expand beyond its connections to the magazine.

Soros has continued to fund the Center long after the rebrand. His most recent grant to the Center was in 2022 and amounted to $150,000 to "build a more equitable future in the field of public interest journalism by strengthening publishing and independent media.”

One 2018 $60,000 grant from Soros, was intended “to provide support for the editorial director fellowship, which will enhance the Nation Institute's ability to undertake and support activities with emphasis on the independent media, civil liberties, social justice and peace.” 

Sunkara’s denials at least reveal that the left is well aware of how discrediting it is to take Soros money - but they’re still not going to do that any time soon.
