The Donald Trump administration is taking action to stop the capitol of the wealthiest nation on Earth from having third-world levels of crime.
In a news conference earlier today, Trump said he’ll place the D.C. police department under federal control and deploy the National Guard to “rescue our nation’s capital from crime, bloodshed, bedlam and squalor.”
“This is Liberation Day in D.C., and we’re going to take our capitol back,” he said.
Trump announced he was invoking Section 740 of the 1973 District of Columbia Home Rule Act to federalize the Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia. The National Guard is also being deployed as part of the effort, as are 120 FBI agents.
Trump also announced a crackdown on homelessness, vowing to remove homeless individuals from D.C. "immediately," and proposed relocating them to temporary shelters far from the capital. He emphasized providing accommodations but stressed they would not be in D.C., aiming to clear encampments from public spaces.
He is also expected to sign an executive order to enhance public safety and beautification, including directives to clear homeless encampments, clean graffiti, and pursue harsher penalties for violent crimes.
