Taxpayers Could Be on the Hook for Letitia James’ Legal Bills

Letitia James, the New York AG who successfully campaigned on her unsuccessful promise of taking down Donald Trump, now finds herself accused of exactly what she accused and charged Trump with.
James got an insane $486 million civil fraud judgement against Trump from an anti-Trump judge in a case where every supposed victim denied being one, and she’s refused to drop it after the election.
Trump had to pay out of pocket to fight off her nonsensical case, but she could have her defense at the taxpayer’s expense if Governor Kathy Hochul gets her way.
According to the New York Post editorial board:
State lawmakers have quietly tucked a sweetheart measure into one of the must-pass budget bills that would put taxpayers on the hook for legal bills Attorney General Letitia James racks up facing federal probes.
The $10 million criminal-defense slush fund would seemingly cover any state employee 1) facing any federal “legally compulsive process” (e.g., subpoenas and so on) as of Jan. 1, 2025, 2) who can claim the federal probe is “a result of the employee’s New York State employment or duties.”
Insiders are clear that it would cover James, even though nothing officially links her day-job work to the Federal Housing Finance Agency’s criminal referral over her private real-estate affairs.
The timing of the creation of this slush fund couldn’t be any more obvious. New York Rep. Elise Stefanik put Hochul on blast for the move; “This disgraceful slush fund epitomizes the cesspool of corruption in Albany, where Democrat elites prioritize protecting their own over the needs of New York families.”
“Letitia James, who illegally weaponized her office to pursue politically motivated witch hunts, now expects taxpayers to foot the bill for her alleged misconduct,” she added.
As the investigation continues, it remains uncertain how much taxpayers might be on the hook for or what the full scope of the allegations entails - but we do know that Trump himself spent over $100 million in legal fees to fight all the witch hunts against him.
That this individual case against James will run up millions in costs is a near certainty. The taxpayers funding this program will overwhelmingly be the exact kind of people that voted for Kamala Harris in the previous election, but that still includes millions who did not.
James needs to be reminded of something she herself loved to say; no one is above the law.
And no one in per position is above legal fees either.
